Many complain that we have worked 110% for acquiring a certain job. But still, we could not acquire it. There may be something fishy about the selection procedure. May be the candidate was selected earlier itself and the interview were only a formality process.
We hear such reasons for not getting selected very often. But, one thing to be remembered is that if you are really qualified and have the talent, you can easily get selected. The only hitch is that there must be some procedural difference which you may not be able to understand.
The procedure could pertain either to:
- Application process
- Interview formalities
- Subject matter which directly correlates to the job requirements.
Application process implies communication and other formalities. This process starts right from viewing the placement advertisement to making sure that your application has reached the hands of the concerned officer.
Usually, a job seeker gets excited as soon as a placement is sorted which suits to his qualifications. In that anxiety, he tends to apply in a hurry.
That anxiousness should always be avoided. You should try to analyze the job requirements as mentioned in the commercial and think whether you can do justice to the job. Knowing the job and doing the job are two different things. You should be willing to do the job as required in the want ad.
Once you develop that instinct to gain that job, you should prepare:
- Cover Letter and
- Resume/Curriculum Vita.
A cover letter is a one paged format which usually consists of three paragraphs. The important points to be taken care of while preparing a cover letter are:
The right person as mentioned in the placement ad has to be addressed with no spelling errors. Wrong spelling of the name of the person concerned or his organization may be personally very offending.
A short concise subject matter which describes the purpose of the letter has to be prepared. Remember, busy people never check letters with no purpose.
The first paragraph should mention the reference of the want ad to which your letter has been prepared as a response. Further to that, you’re personal details and your will to work in that position has to be mentioned. This specification should sound humble and confident at the same time.
The second paragraph should mention the expected job requirements as per your analysis. Naturally, once you arrive upon the responsibilities, you should clarify to the employer that you possess those qualifications. The best way to prove such ability is by matching your credentials to the required works as posted in the ad.
In the third paragraph, you should thank your prospective employer for taking the pain to read through your letter. A special mention of your proposed follow up action should be declared so that the employer gets to know that you are a meticulous prior planner.
The same is the case with resume/curriculum vita also. You need to know the current trends and formats and use that knowledge for preparing up to date formats. If the formats look to be outdated, the employer may not consider you to be fast enough.
