Things to Remember in Writing a Cover Letter

The cover letter will be the basis of the first impression that the reader may have about you and your skills. Thus, this should be concise and straight to the point. It should be treated as a business letter. Here are some fundamentals in writing it:

The letter should just be limited to one page.

It should be catchy.

Provide a brief description of yourself such as your professional and personal background information relating to your experiences and skills.

Ensure that the date is stipulated in your letter.

Every cover letter that you write must be particularly made for the company or the employer that you want. This task could be very time consuming but by following the right format of the letter you can make your letter more effective. Each of its paragraph should be properly used in conveying the important detail in an exact sequence of order. Below are the specific use or purpose of each paragraph:

The first paragraphs should be used to catch the attention of the reader and hook them to read more. The primary sentence must tell the reader regarding the purpose of the letter and the job the you would want to have. In addition, the second and third sentences should briefly mention how your qualities and professional skills demonstrate you to be the company’s future asset.

The second paragraph should provide the details of your academic and professional credentials which are relevant to the job vacancy. Be sure to concentrate on your professional skills rather than in your prior job descriptions. You can indicate at least an example wherein you have used your skills to bring benefits to the company.

The third paragraph should be use to show your knowledge about the company and relate it to your professional and personal attributes. In these section, you have to show your knowledge in both the industry and the company, and must reinforce the opinion that your unique qualities and attributes make you the best person for the job.

The last paragraph should be used in making an action statement. Clearly, mention your sincere interest for the position and express that you will follow up soon. Instead of requesting for the employer to contact you, tell that you will contact them to arrange an interview.

Generally, you have to take note that your cover letter must emphasize your professional skills and attainment. It should not be a repeat of your resume in a paragraph form. Further, always concentrate on the what you can contribute to the success of the company. It should leave a thinking that it’s their lose if they shall not interview you.
