Successful Cover Letters For Students

Curriculum vitae and resumes are often accompanied by cover letters in order to be successful. The sole purpose of attaching a cover letter together with your resume or curriculum vitae is to establish a good contact with a prospective employer by introducing yourself to them as well as to invite them into reading your attachment by stirring up interest towards them.

As the old saying goes, “First impressions last.” With this being said, it is very important for your cover letter to be capable of making a big impact towards your reader so that you would be contacted by them soon for a possible job interview. Here are a few quick tips on how to make yourself an effective cover letter.

Start out by listing down your personal contact details at the top of your document. This should include your full name, your full address, your e-mail address and at least one contact number. Keep in mind that you should not use any alias or nick names for your resume. Also, never use a P.O. Box address for your resume. Lastly, provide a personal number or mobile number so that your future employers can contact you immediately if ever they decide to give you a shot for an interview.

The next thing you should do is do a little research about the company or group that you are interested in. If you cannot find the information that you need online, try contacting their HR department and then ask for the specific information that you need. Ask for the name of the director or hiring manager so that you could directly address your cover letter to them. It would also be a good idea to know a little more about the company itself so that you could tailor your resume towards the company’s needs and get yourself in tune with their goals.

As for the body of your cover letter, showcase your skills and qualifications by mentioning all of these things to your future employer. Although your cover letter may not contain that much content compared to experienced individuals, use what you have and try to give examples of your skills, talents and achievements in order to impress your reader. Keep in mind that the content of your resume is as valuable as the presentation. Come up with a clean and professional looking layout so that your document can match up or make up with the lack of content.

As for the last or closing paragraph, never forget to thank your reader for their time and be assumptive about a future interview. This is very effective especially for young aspiring candidates for it shows your reader that you are really interested and enthusiastic about working with them in the future.

Before enclosing your resume or curriculum vitae with your cover letter, be sure that you perform some proof reading to rid your document of grammatical flaws and typographical errors. If possible, have a few people comment on your presentation and be sure to be open to any constructive comments that could improve not only your document but also your overall chances of winning an interview.
