A Simple Yet Effective Resume
Writing a resume is easier said than done. Before a candidate can effectively produce a winning document, there are a couple of steps that one should follow in order to create an impressive resume.
First up, create a database of all of the job experiences that you have had in the past. Be sure to have detailed descriptions about your tasks as well as your responsibilities for each position that you have had. Also, it is important for you to indicate the inclusive dates or time periods while working under those positions.
Another important reminder while doing this is to never leave anything out. Be sure to include all jobs, (both paid and unpaid) awards, and accomplishments that you had acquired during those times. It is vital for you to keep and update this work experience database so that you won’t be doing this process repeatedly every time you make a resume for yourself.
After you are done with your personal work experience database, do the same towards your personal skills. Create a list about the different applicable skills or soft skills that you might have or acquired throughout your work history. This is important because these things can really pump up or improve not only your resume but also your chances of being selected as the best candidate for the job.
Once you are done with the “backbone” or basis of your resume, it is now time for you to tailor your document towards the job position you are currently aiming for. Use your work experience and skills database as references to quickly see if you are qualified for the job position or not. If you possess specific or multiple requirements in the job opening that you want, you can just simply select these things from your database and beef them up. You should transform them in to appealing sentences or phrases that is capable of easily getting your reader’s attention.
Once done listing down the facts that you are to include in your resume, use a style or format that can effectively market or present yourself to your prospective employer. If possible, squeeze all the necessary information to one page and be sure to keep the page count down to a minimum of one and at a maximum of two pages. This is important so that your future employer won’t easily lose interest while reading your document. In fact, 90% of resume readers instantly lose interest the moment they encounter boring walls of text.
Also keep in mind that your resume should be easy on the eyes. Avoid fancy fonts and styles as well as the use of colored paper and ink. Keep everything professional by sticking to plain black text and traditional fonts and always use crisp white paper when printing out your document. Also, be consistent with the layout design or style when it comes to the margins and sizes of each element (bullet points, font size, etc.) that you are using in your resume.
Before printing out your resume, be sure to proofread your work and is possible, have someone check it for errors. If possible, have them comment on your work and be open to constructive criticisms for these things can help you improve your resume and at the same time also increase your chances of winning an interview.
