How To Make A Resume

Have you ever ask yourself what is a resume and how will you catch the attention of potential employers? With continuous increase of job seekers, most employers who received huge amount of resumes are now using resume tracking or applicant tracking system.

Do you still remember the last time you had a major purchase? What are the characteristics of that product why you eventually bough it? Before making a resume, try to think yourself as a product and the employers as the buyer. Your resume needs to have the same effect to the employer with your initial advert and the ‘closer-look’ information just by scanning your outstanding features. If it works, the employer will be convinced to shoot you for an interview. However, you are an extremely complex product; your work history, characteristic as an individual employee, and your potentials to that job.

It’s really hard to know where to start, or indeed how to start writing a resume. These are some basic guidelines on how to put that elusive attention – grabbing resume together:

Determine the position and what kind of industry you want to target before you write the first word in your resume. Then, make an easy to follow outline of your presentation and fill-in all important details of your background.”Be sure to focus on your target!”

Use chronological resume than functional resume.

Make sure that it will not exceed two pages in length. For typical entry level college students, the general rule for page length is only one.

Do not include your personal information such as marital status, children, date of birth, ethnicity and etc. on a US style resume. This is only acceptable when you make an international resume or curriculum vitae.

Put your name on the first line at the top of your resume using a large font together with your contact information underneath it.

Make a summary section “profile” in your resume to give the reader a brief picture of your background.

Put a bulleted list in the experience section to showcase and emphasize your accomplishments. Make these statements short and strong.

For the body text of your resume, make sure to use a font size between 10 and 12. Also, make sure that the font size that you chose is compatible with the applicant tracking system that many employer use.

As much as possible, avoid using negative information in your background. Like if you were terminated with your previous job.

Do not write an arrogant, pompous or any self-serving manner to your resume. It will give you a tough time selling your self to your future employer.

Don’t include references or salary information on your resume document.

After you finalize your resume, make sure that you put all important details and file conversations you will need in your job search.

Make sure to proof-read your resume.
