Why You Need And How To Write Your High School Resume

Writing a resume as a high school student may seem weird but in reality, it reflects a couple of things towards the individual who is trying to make an early step towards his or her professional career. Having the need for a resume this early serves different purposes. They can be used for getting temporary jobs, volunteer work, or internship applications. Students wanting to present and create their own resumes in as early as high school shows that the individual is having no second thoughts of taking the first step towards the professional world which also translates that he or she is responsible, career minded, driven and has the initiative to become successful in the future.

For starters, knowing the basics of creating a resume is important. Though having the qualities and skills needed to present a very professional-looking document is essential, it is not completely necessary for a student resume. Retaining the professional look and format is important but the graphical presentation of your document by means of resume style and design can stray a little bit. Adding some spunk to your student resume is acceptable but never go overboard with too much eye candy or other unnecessary elements. Adding things like glitters, stickers or having too many colors on your document is a big no.

If you have no idea where to start, searching the Internet for resume samples is the way to go. From then on, examine a couple of models and then decide for yourself which type of presentation would perfectly fit and work for you.

Start off with a common header that contains your full name, current address, contact number (either a home land line number or your personal mobile number), and a professional-looking and sounding e-mail address.

Next up after the header, list down your work experience. In most cases, your resume needs to have job experiences relevant to the position that you are trying to aim for. But as a student, listing down any job experience that you might have in the past is good enough. Either part-time or full time, it wouldn’t matter as long as you have something to present on this section.

In case if you do not have any type of work experience, volunteered work under any organization will work out just fine. Just keep in mind that instead of putting them under “work experience”, place them under “volunteer work”.

A “relevant experience” section can also be added on to your resume if you have undergone trainings or had experiences relevant to the position that you are currently aiming for. These are also viable if you have no work or volunteer experience. Just be sure to elaborate on how these experiences you had would help you perform your future tasks with ease.

An active student is more likely to get jobs compared to someone who isn’t. Employers would give more opportunities to young applicants who has good grades and is active in both academical and non-academical activities in and outside of the school campus. Prospective employers also want to see and know if whom they are hiring are opportunity grabbers or happy-go-lucky individuals.

Having at least three people under your “reference list” is necessary as a student but instead of including their whole information at the end of your resume, just indicate that your character references are all available by request. If they ask for their information, just follow up an give them three people who could vouch for you. Character references that you could supply your employers could either be your teachers, coaches, or the people whom you had previously worked with. Keep in mind that these people under your reference list should be related to you professionally and is not being supplied by any other person.

Being able to create your resume in as early as high school would help you in your search for employment, volunteer work, or internship. Being employed and developing your work related skills early increases your overall chances of getting a well paying job in the end. Not only that, it will also further develop your skills in writing a better resume that you will surely need in the future.
